Student Actions

Teacher Actions

The students will:

  • Actively listen to the teacher’s safety protocols with age-appropriate physical activities.

  • Follow instructions and demonstrate the safety protocols with age-appropriate physical activities.

The teacher will:

  • Introduce and explain the safety protocols with age-appropriate physical activities

  • Demonstrate safety protocols with age-appropriate physical activities. Explain strategies to ensure students can work safely in different types of activities:

    • Instant Activities

    • Smaller groups

    • Whole group

    • Circuit stations

  • Allow time for students to practice; observe to see if they understand the safety protocols with age-appropriate physical activities.

  • Provide feedback (corrective) and make modifications for students who are having difficulty working safely.

Key Understandings

Teacher Insights

  1. Active listening: The practice of preparing to listen, observing what verbal and non-verbal messages are being sent, and then providing appropriate feedback for the sake of showing attentiveness to the message being presented.

  2. Cooperation: The process of working together to the same end.

  3. Expectations: Effort to set the same high educational standards for all students in a class, school, or education system.

  4. Feedback: Information given to the learner about the learner's performance relative to learning goals or outcomes.

  5. Protocols: Structured processes that encourage active listening and reflection while keeping a conversation focused on a specific topic or problem.

  6. Responsible behavior: Students that exhibit respect, accept and meet challenges, and work with others in a team environment.

  • At the first of the school year, establish expectations and safety protocols for age-appropriate physical activities.

  • Practice strategies to resolve conflicts with their peers in physical education.

  • For example, teach “Rock, Talk, Walk” strategy. When students have a conflict, they can play Rock-Paper-Scissors, talk it out (e.g., at the end of the line or in the calming corner), or walk away.

  • Be specific about what responsible behavior looks like when working with peers and using the equipment.

  • If students are having difficulty working with peers or equipment, provide class time to practice protocols and conflict resolution skills or make modifications for students.

Assessment

  • Use visual demonstrations or videos to illustrate safety techniques and protocols for each physical activity. Visual aids can help individuals grasp safety concepts more effectively, especially for those who learn best through visual cues.

  • Introduce physical activities in a gradual and progressive manner, starting with simpler activities and gradually increasing complexity as students demonstrate mastery of safety principles. Scaffold learning experiences to match the developmental readiness of the participants.

  • Offer feedback and opportunities for reflection on safety practices following physical activities. Encourage students to discuss what went well and identify areas for improvement, fostering a culture of continuous learning and awareness.
