b) Dribbles in general space with control of ball and body while increasing and decreasing speed.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

The student will:

  • Combine hand dribbling with other skills during one vs. one practice skills.

    • Dribbling cues:

      • Eyes up.

      • Use finger pads,

      • Push with Arm and Fingers

      • Waist high

  • Demonstrates offensive skills while dribbling a basketball with hand.

  • Demonstrates defensive skill in a one vs one drill or game situation.

  • Follow safety protocol while dribbling and traveling in general space.

The teacher will:

  • Introduce and explain students to the skill of dribbling combined with other dribbling skills (cross-over, passing).

  • Demonstrate and introduce other basic basketball skills such as: cross-over, v-cut and shooting.

    • Critical Elements of dribbling:

      • Keep your eyes up to see the court.

      • Use the finger pads, not the palm.

      • Push with your arms and fingers. Slow and controlled, not a slapping motion.

      • Keep the ball waist high.

  • Allow students time to practice and experiment with different dribbling moves such as the cross-over or v-cut.

  • Allow them to use their dribbling skills to attempt shooting against their opponent.

  • Give students time to watch and practice drills with “Fun Youth Basketball Drills” video.

  • Will observe and give feedback to students’ posture and hand positioning on the ball while dribbling.

Key Understandings

Teacher Insights

  1. Ball handlingThe control of the ball, as in basketball or soccer, by skillful dribbling and accurate passing.

  2. ControlThe ability to start and stop movement, change direction and hold a shape efficiently.

  3. Defense: The action of preventing an opponent from scoring.

  4. DribblingIn sports, dribbling is maneuvering a ball by one player while moving in a given direction, avoiding defenders' attempts to intercept the ball. A successful dribble will bring the ball past defenders legally and create opportunities to score.

  5. General spaceThe space within a room or bounded area that a person can move through using any means of locomotion.

  6. Offense: The team or players in a game or sport who are attempting to score or move the ball forward.

To show progression with skill:

  • Teacher will pair students by ability level in sets of two and have them practice dribbling past each other with one hand pushing the ball to the floor.

  • Encourage students to try dribbling the ball past their opponent using the critical elements to dribbling combined with other dribbling and ball movement skills (cross-over, passing).

  • Will encourage students to practice drills at recess and at home.

UDL

Assessment

  • Allow the student to demonstrate dribbling skills combined with passing and shooting in a modified way, such as with visual cues or simplified steps.

  • Provide the student with additional time to practice and experiment with different dribbling moves like the cross-over or v-cut to master the skills at their own pace.

  • Use visual aids or posters that outline the critical elements of dribbling, reminding the student to keep their eyes up, use finger pads, push with arms and fingers, and keep the ball waist high.

  • Pair the student with a peer during practice sessions to provide encouragement, support, and guidance while practicing dribbling skills combined with passing and shooting.
