Student Actions

Teacher Actions

The student will:

  • Perform curling, twisting, and stretching actions with correct application in dance and gymnastics.

The teacher will:

  • Introduce curling, twisting, and stretching actions in movement, dance, and gymnastics.

  • Demonstrate or have a student demonstrate proper technique using cues as students watch.

  • Explain the relevance of curling, twisting, and stretching actions and how they relate to other skills and activities.

  • Have the student practice skills, provide feedback, and make modifications during activities.

  • As students practice each skill, the teacher watches to see if the students are meeting the critical elements for each of the skills. Provide feedback as necessary.

Key Understandings

Teacher Insights

  1. Balance: An even distribution of weight which allows someone or something to stay upright and steady.

  2. Bending:  To incline the body downward from the vertical and move to an angled position.

  3. Curling: A term used in primary grade physical education meaning the body is formed in a fetal position.

  4. Small-sided practice tasks: Small-sided games or deliberate tasks designed to practice particular skills or tasks.

  5. Stretching: To straighten or extend one's body or a part of one's body to its full length, typically so as to tighten one's muscles or in order to reach something.

  6. Twisting: To form into a bent, curling, or distorted shape.

  7. Weight transfer: Movement of body weight from one body part to another.

To increase student understanding and creativity, have the students work in small groups to create their own flow and storyline.

  • Encourage students to focus and breathe properly; in through their nose and out through their mouths.

  • Ensure students have plenty of room, mats, and various apparatus to incorporate into their routines

  • Encourage students to hold their stretches or curled positions at a comfortable point

  • Help students understand the importance of holding their stretch long enough to relax and elongate their muscles

  • Encourage students to push farther once muscles are relaxed

  • Reach, stretch, twist, or bend until a mild tension is felt.

  • Move slowly, do not bounce

  • Hold the stretch for at least 20 seconds, longer if possible

  • Slowly roll into and out of the next curling or stretching position

  • Remind students that stretching and curling activities should be gentle, light, and sustained movements.

UDL

Assessment

  • Break down complex dance sequences into smaller, more manageable steps, focusing on basic movements before incorporating curling, twisting, and stretching actions.

  • Adjust the height, incline, or stability of gymnastics apparatus to make it more accessible for individuals with varying abilities.

  • Modify game rules or equipment to accommodate individuals with different abilities, ensuring that everyone can participate and contribute to the game.

  • Allow students to work with a peer or in a group who can provide encouragement and assistance during dance, gymnastics, and small-sided practice tasks.
